Entry #5. Mayhem
- The author of the ad wants the audience to experience a feeling of being encouraged to purchase their insurance. They want the audience motivated to consider buying Allstate.
- I think this advertisement is trying to promote that basic lifestyle that everyone lives. The targeted audience is to the people that have homes and a family. This is because this ad is promoting home insurance, while causing a problem that only home insurance can pay for, instead of out of pocket. The ad is a promposal gone wrong right outside of a home and for this purpose, Allstate insurance should be purchased to fix the problem.
- The context of the advertisement is to demonstrate how a simple promposal could go a different route than what was planned that resulted in a house fire.
- By looking at this ad, I can conclude about American culture that something as basic and easy as a proposal to prom could put their lives in danger if gone wrong. Meaning that the average American needs to be careful of their surroundings and possibly have their backup plan, such as Allstate.
- Most people that watch this ad will react with humor because of comedy included in this ad. For example, the man says, "Tonight, sparks are gonna fly" and "Things are about to heat up", almost as if he was foreshadowing, but in a funny way.
- The author uses two high school teenagers in a backyard, with the help of a man during the prom proposal. The setting is during the nighttime so that the candles could be seen easily in the dark instead of the daylight. It was also windy, which is what caused the candle to tip over and burn the leaves on the ground, leading up to the plants on the house wall, causing a minor house fire.
- The first thing that is seen is the teenage boy calling out for Stacy, then the camera is focused in the man on the floor with candles on his suit. Then, it can be seen that it is a promposal because of the candles spelling "PROM?" and the boy standing next to it with flowers and a tuxedo shirt. Afterwards, the wind knocks down a candle and the house is slightly caught on fire. Lastly, Stacy's parents notice and attempt to put the fire out, while the Allstate man is trying to convince the audience to purchase their home insurance so that something like this incident could be covered by them, instead of being paid by the homeowners.
- I think the ad was set up this way in order to catch the audience's attention. If they see something as cute and corny as a promposal that eventually takes the wrong turn, they will stay to finish watching the whole ad. This advertisement represents a serious but humorous tone for the audience because of the dialogue and actions presented.
